EdibleFlowers

All the talk we've been hearing about food gardening this week made me think of this display I saw at Rolling Green Nursery in New Hampshire a couple of years ago.

We'd love to see the clever ways you're marketing edibles. Send your photo of the week images to smartinez@gie.net.

VegGarden

VegGarden2

Our photo of the week comes from Linda Shively, the public relations representative for Farmington Gardens in Beaverton, Oregon.

“In 2008, Farmington Gardens built this demo vegetable garden, to showcase how to grow veggies in a small space, and different strategies for growing vertically,” Shively said. “We also wanted to show that a vegetable garden can be an attractive part of your landscape, so we incorporated edible flowers as well. We utilize lots of signage, so the garden is an educational tool. We have had much interest in it!”

We’re spotlighting display gardens on Open Register for the next few weeks. We’d love to see yours! Send us the particulars.

Bowood

Our photo of the week comes from Ellen Barredo of Bowood Farms in St. Louis.

“Our display garden is in irrigated windowboxes” Ellen said. “The windows of our building face west so the vines shade and cool our building and show our urban customers how to do the same. The planting include hyacinth bean vine, passion vine, potato vine, scaevola, and scented geraniums.”

  2008 Echinacea Virgin

This week's photo comes from Marlene A. Frisbie, controller at Hoffie Nursery.

"I'm [sending] a photo of Echinacea 'Virgin' from last summer," Marlene said. "It's been a very cold, snowy winter here and I'm quite ready to see white flowers instead of white precipitation! I wish the photo also carried the great scent of this flower. Bring on the spring!"

Beginning next week, Open Register will begin spotlighting display gardens as our photo of the week. Send your photos our way!

Photo of the week

Before the Yuletide season comes to a close, we bring you some photos of the fantastic Christmas displays at DeWayne's Home & Garden Showplace in Selma, N.C.

Here's what Marcia Woodall, the store's marketing coordinator, had to say about this photo of the week submission: "These are a few of my favorites. Debra L. Raynor and her merchandising crew transformed our greenhouse into a Christmas decor showroom! Customers visit upstairs to see the year-round displays (all new designs for '08) and they visit the greenhouse to find even more designs for the season!"
