Going compostal
As the local proprietor of all things “garden center,” I receive a lot of e-mails touting items and services that purportedly will make our world better in some fashion. The product in the missive Andrew Cook recently sent me actually fits that bill.
The Earthmaker from Exaco Trading Group (Andrew’s employer) is being touted as “The King of Composters.” While I can only wonder just how the Earl and Viceroy of Composters might be constructed, I know for a fact that “The King” is a revolutionary, new, eco-friendly, three-chamber bin that is designed to take the hard work out of home composting. Among its noteworthy features:
The gravity-based product is the first continuous-cycle compost bin – organic waste is added at the top any time; quality compost is taken from the bottom when needed.
Material aerates as it falls down the chambers, decomposing rather than rotting, thus reducing the production of greenhouses gasses.
The Earthmaker keeps waste and mature compost separate.
- It has a large 466-liter/123-gallon capacity.
- It features large openings for adding waste and removing compost.
- It can produce 35 liters/10 gallons of compost every month.
To put that last feature into perspective, consider that the combined printed versions of all my blog entries over the past two years don’t add up to 10 gallons of compost material — contrary to what you’ve probably heard.
