« National Mall gets organic makeover | Main | Expect hesitation this holiday season »

But wait, there’s more!

OK, now that we’re closing in on Halloween (hey, I had to get one more mention in!) my next favorite season is coming up: Demo season!

That’s right – every store in the known universe (especially Central Market) is going to be showing me how I, too, can create wonderful holiday décor, candles and paintings, lay floor, create wreaths from live greens, put together a fantastic holiday outfit, get my house ready for spring cleaning, de-vein and cook shrimp and oh, so much more.

I admit it. I’m one of those individuals who just can’t resist watching an in-store demo then buying everything to take it home and do it myself. And if it’s easy enough, I am great at word-of-mouth (surprising, I know). Even better, if I know in advance – say a promotional flier or coupon sent to my house or e-mail – I am apt to bring along some like-minded people who are eager to buy and try. Most of my shopping partners are also those who are in it for the long haul. Jumping store to store is usually an all-weekend affair, so be ready!

In case you’re planning on some demos this year, here are a few tips from a “season”ed pro:

  1. Keep it fairly simple and the supply list low.
  2. Make the demo interactive and your host lively.
  3. Promote, promote, promote!
  4. Offer some kid-friendly options.
  5. Most of all, keep it fun. We’re there to spend our money, so make sure we’re having fun while we do it!
